AIR + SHU = good?

April 7th, 2008 | Posted by lars in AIR

I just stumbled over SHU, a new wrapper for AIR applications. You can turn your AIR app into a standalone excecutable (at least 5mb) that is able to launch other applications. Sounds interesting, but is the SHU Player able to upgrade to a new AIR version? Can I still make use of the auto update feature if everything is packed into one big standalone package? We’ll see… at the moment it sounds like a better Zinc, maybe the next AIR release will satisfy our needs ;)

Yes, it sounds like a good alternative to Zinc, as Zinc is running into multiple issues at the moment. The update problem should not be a problem as none of the projector does it…

Yes, I really hope that Adobe come up with an application packager than a runtime. I heard initially that a version 2 of AIR will have it….

  • Just a heads up on Zinc. Make sure you do a check on the cross platform methods. We’ve been using it for an ongoing project and it’s burned us more than a couple times.
